    Rescuing Harry the hedgehog

    23 October 2020

With the launch of the Harper Adams Hedgehog Friendly Campus Scheme, staff and students are already coming together to help the animals around our campus, beginning with the rescuing of Harry the hedgehog.

Harry was found at approximately at 5.30pm on 5th October, wandering onto the B5062 near the junction to Flatt Road at the south side of Harper Adams’ campus.

Rachel Baugh, RVN and university lecturer, stopped the traffic to pick him up and assess him. He was very small and, with it still being light, he shouldn’t have been out and about. He is a young male and was very underweight at 350g.

Harry was taken to Stapley Grange Wildlife centre where he was admitted for care over the winter. Here, he had a vet check and flea and worm treatment and will now spend the winter warm and cosy in Stapley’s care.

Come March we will hopefully get a call to come and collect him so he can be released back to his territory at Harper Adams.

This rescue is only the beginning of the work of the volunteers to the Hedgehog Friendly Campus Scheme. To find out more click here or, if you are interested in joining the Harper Adams Hedgehog Friendly Campus scheme, please get in touch at sustainability@harper-adams.ac.uk.
